Is your team spending 15 hours troubleshooting cameras and editing audio instead of concentrating on marketing tasks that drive growth?
Watch the breakdown above or read on to discover why marketing teams shouldn't create their own content as a primary strategy, the true hidden opportunity cost of DIY video, and how to reclaim your team's time.
Your Marketing Team Already Has A Full Time Job
More and more, marketing teams are being asked to do more with less. They are responsible for strategy, campaign planning, budgets, stakeholder management, reporting, sales support and customer research.
Then someone hands them a phone and says, “Can you just film it as well?”
It sounds effecient, but usually, it just pulls the person responsible for the campaign away from the work that makes the campaign successful.
A strong marketing team understands the customer. They know what the audience is struggling with, what questions keep coming up, where people are dropping out of the sales process and which messages are most likely to move them forward.
The problem is that many marketing teams are now also expected to plan the shoot, write the script, find the location, organise the staff, set up the camera, fix the sound, take the photos and edit everything afterwards. And then still deliver the campaign on time. Frankly, it's a lot to ask of one person or a lean team.
Content Creation Is Not A Quick Task
There is no such thing as “just grabbing a few quick shots” if the expectation is that those shots will build trust, stop attention and support a campaign.
You can certainly walk outside, point a phone at something and record it.
But that does not mean the result is ready to publish. Someone still needs to think about:
A Phone Is Not a Production Strategy
Over the past few years, older CEOs or business leaders have started to believe that because some influencers create successful content with a phone, established businesses should be able to do the same thing.
But the phone is not the reason that content works. The strongest creators usually have an excellent understanding of their audience, their message and the platform they are publishing on. They know how to structure the first few seconds. They know which topics will get attention. They may make the content look casual, but the thinking underneath it is usually very deliberate.
There is also an important difference between an individual creator building a personal audience and an established business asking customers to trust them with a significant purchase, contract or long-term relationship.
Not every audience responds to deliberately rough or low-production content. If you are selling complex services, industrial products or high-value business solutions, your media may need to communicate capability, consistency and professionalism. That does not mean everything needs to look like a television commercial.
It means the production style needs to suit the audience and the decision they are making.
Marketing teams know you cannot simply copy the visual language of an influencer and expect the same result.
Why Marketing Teams Shouldn’t Create Their Own Content
The biggest problem is not that marketing teams are incapable of producing content. Many marketers are perfectly capable of filming, editing and taking photos. The problem is what gets sacrificed while they are doing it.
The business may save money on the invoice, but it can lose far more through weaker campaigns, slower execution and a strategist who is too busy editing to focus on the work they were actually hired to do. It is moving the cost somewhere less visible.
The pressure becomes worse when the team is lean. Marketing managers are often expected to deliver stronger results with fewer people and tighter budgets. They may be responsible for campaigns worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to the business, but given a small annual content budget and told to make it work. Then, when it underperforms, there is an assumption that the marketing failed. But, they may have never had the resources required to execute the strategy properly.
Outsourcing Production Does Not Mean Outsourcing Marketing
This is an important distinction.
A marketing team does not need another agency trying to take over the strategy. Established brands usually already understand their market, audience and business goals. What they need is someone who can execute the production side without creating more work.
The best production partner should be able to listen to the marketing direction, understand what the campaign needs and then manage the process from there.
They should not begin the conversation by talking about cameras. They should begin by asking about the audience, the objective and where the media will be used.
They should also be able to look beyond one requested video and identify what else could be captured while the crew is already on site. That might include different campaign hooks, expert interviews, short social clips, photography, FAQ answers or footage the team can reuse later. This is where outsourcing can create far more value than simply hiring someone to film the brief.
When Does Internal Content Actually Make Sense?
Saying marketing teams shouldn't create their own content doesn't mean internal filming should be banned entirely.
There is a clear difference between casual internal content and strategic campaign production:
Give Marketing Teams the Support to Do Their Best Work
Marketing teams are not struggling because they lack ideas.
Most are struggling because they do not have enough time or production support to execute those ideas properly. But they are being asked to manage too many different roles at once.
That is why marketing teams shouldn’t create their own content as the main production model for the business. Let the marketing team focus on the customer, the campaign and the commercial outcome. Then give them a production partner who can turn that direction into professional photo and video assets without adding another department for them to manage.
